What happens as we age?

The cellular membranes of the skin are composed of phospholipids and proteins, which act as a defense mechanism to the aggressions of the environment. These membranes are attacked by free radicals which cause hardening of the membrane and eventually lead to aging. As we age the defense mechanisms become slower and take longer to act, the skin becomes wrinkled, less flexible and looses firmness. The theory of free radicals is the one that has earned importance as the primary cause of the aging, and characterized by the accumulation of lesions of the cell during the individual's life.

The skin also gradually loses its ability to retain water, and, as a result, becomes drier, thinner, and looser which leads to an older appearance of the skin.

Other causes

Aging is not the only cause of skin-aging. Other factors that contribute to aging are smoking, exposure to the sun, lack of exercise and pollution all add to increased formation of wrinkles and fine lines.

All these factors combined with the natural process of aging cause a loss of elasticity and resilience.

Why do smokers get more wrinkles?

Smoking has a much greater effect on skin aging than most people realize. While it has been known that smoking causes premature aging of the skin, the mechanism behind the accelerated aging process has not been fully understood. A new study at St. John's Institute of Dermatology showed that smoking activates the genes that are responsible for a skin enzyme that breaks down collagen in the skin. This causes the skin to sag and wrinkle.

Lack of exercise

Exercise results in increased blood circulation, increased delivery of nutrients to the skin, and makes the capillaries stronger. Regular exercise can slow down the aging process and make you look younger.

Sleep

If you are not getting at least 6 hours of sleep each night, then you may be contributing to the aging of the skin.
