Dietary Suggestions

Research at DS Laboratories has shown that acne is a condition that is a result of a specific pore structure (infundibulum, follicular duct). Some individuals have pores that permit the unobstructed flow of sebum to the surface of the skin. A blocked pore causes the proliferation of bacteria and buildup of sebum, the area around the duct can become inflamed and then a reddened papule forms on the skin, a pimple. Therefore, acne is not caused by poor diet, lack of exercise, or poor hygiene. We are born with the tendency to have or not to have acne.

For example, someone who has “non-sticky” pores can eat a pound of chocolate everyday and never get a single pimple. However, people who have a tendency to develop acne will suffer from a more severe acne condition when exposed to a poor diet, poor hygiene, and an unhealthy lifestyle. So while acne is not caused by these factors, these factors can contribute to make acne worse.

If you are suffering from acne we recommend that you abstain from eating junk food, especially sugary foods. It is best to practice a healthy lifestyle and a balanced diet. Practicing a healthy lifestyle will help control the condition and also will have the added benefit of improving your overall health.
