How often should I wash my hair?

Generally, hair falls into the following groups: normal, oily, dry and damaged. Regardless of your hair type, we recommend washing the hair everyday as this keeps the scalp clean and prevents oily build-up. It is important to maintain a healthy and clean scalp to help minimize hair loss. Dandruff, seborrhea, fungus bacteria, and pollution are all factors that will accelerate hair loss. If you have dry hair it is best to use a mild shampoo that has been designed for everyday use. We also recommend using Nizoral AD® shampoo several times a week to improve your results with Spectral DMC - especially if you have oily hair or dandruff. Several studies have shown that Nizoral AD® can increase the number of active hair follicles.

Oily Hair. If your hair is generally oily or greasy, avoid running your hands through your hair. Putting your hands through your hair only spreads the oil and leads to clogged hair follicles which can generally contribute to hair loss. When it comes to washing your oily hair, choose shampoos designed specifically for oily hair. It is best to avoid the use of conditioners if your hair is oily.

Dry Hair. If your hair doesn’t feel obviously oily in between washes it is best to use a mild shampoo. Avoid shampoos specifically designed for dry hair as it can further clog the hair follicles. Johnson & Johnson® Baby shampoo is an excellent shampoo for daily use if you have dry hair.

Damaged Hair. Bleaching and coloring treatments are pretty tough on hair and can cause damage to the scalp. Drugstore home treatments are particularly harsh and should be avoided. It is highly recommended that you avoid these treatments if you are experiencing hair loss.

African Hair. African hair is usually prone to damage and dryness. African hair is also very curly and this causes the oil secreted from the scalp to get trapped under the hair. This oil can clog the hair follicle and accelerate hair loss. For this reason, it is also recommended for people of African descent to wash the hair every day with a mild shampoo to help minimize hair loss.

Style in moderation. Styling products contain agents that, if used in excess, will make your hair even oilier. Avoid mousses, pomades, gels and styling creams and lotions. If you must use styling aids then try to use them in moderation. Following the above guidelines will help accelerate your treatment with Spectral DMC. Once you have restored your hair growth to normal levels then you can return to your standard hair care routine. Continued use of Spectral DMC will help you maintain strong and healthy looking hair.
