CAUSES OF HAIR LOSS

It is not fully understood what causes hair loss, however, several hypotheses and models have been introduced to identify the major factors. It is commonly believed that stress, deficient diet, poor circulation, inactivity, and sweat lead to hair loss. These factors can certainly accelerate loss or make an existing problem worse, but they are generally not the causes.

In extreme cases of emotional or physical stress, the immune system can respond by attacking follicles and creating temporary hair loss. Male Pattern Baldness

Male pattern baldness, also called androgenic alopecia, is caused in large part by androgen receptors binding with dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone that assists in sexual development during puberty. Present in all men, DHT regulates the growth and resting cycles of hair follicles. A problem arises when high levels of DHT cause a loss of biological balance in the follicles, resulting in slower growth and longer resting periods.

Each time a new hair forms in an affected follicle, it grows thinner and shorter than the one before. This degradation over time leads to male pattern baldness, which affects the crown of the head and the frontal hairline. It is a genetic condition inherited from either parent.

Normal cycle of hair growth and loss

At any one time, about 15 percent of the hair on your scalp is in a resting phase, called telogen. After two to three months, the resting hair falls out and a new hair starts to grow in its place. This growing phase, called anagen, lasts for two to six years. Each hair grows approximately 1 cm per month during this phase.

It is normal to shed some hair each day (about 100–150) as part of this cycle. If you are losing more then 150 hairs per day, then you should take steps to prevent further loss.
